What is a Sump Pump & Why Do You Need One?
Sump pumps are designed for properties that have a continuous negative grade, or that are completely flat. The sump pump works by collecting water in the sump basin and then forcibly moving the water through the drainage lines and out to a municipal storm drain or well. Due to their commercial grade and durable design, sump pumps can also be used to keep water out of basements and crawlspaces, even if they are completely covered with water.
Submersible vs. Pedestal Sump Pumps
There are two types of sump pumps: submersible and pedestal. Submersible sump pumps are most commonly used as they are more powerful and can help other debris pass through the drainage system without hesitation. These pumps have the motor built inside of the tank and remain completely dry when in operation. They are powerful; however, the submersible pump makes maintenance a little more involved than a standard pedestal pump since the basin will most likely have to be dug up to service.
Pedestal sump pumps work well for areas with smaller drainage needs. If in an area where there may be a lot of additional debris, pedestal sump pumps will not be as powerful as a submersible pump. Pedestal pumps are easier to maintain since the motor is located above the ground.
